Apple tree varieties Kovalenkovskoe: description of the variety and care

The Kovalenkovskoe apple variety is a development of the Belarusian Food Institute, developed by free pollination of the Lafarm apple tree. The fruit is named in honor of the author of this miracle of selection, GK Kovalenko, but the people often call it “Red Sweet”. The fruit tree is included in the register of varieties and breeds of the Republic of Belarus. The apple tree can also be found in Russia - it grows in the Central region of the country. In order to successfully grow apples of this variety in your garden, you need to understand its features and learn more about tree care. Its fertility depends on proper care, and, consequently, the richness of the crop. Therefore, in today's article you will find a detailed description of the variety and recommendations for its cultivation.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Kovalenkovskoe apple-tree is a fast-growing tree belonging to medium-sized species. A dense crown of medium density usually (with independent growth, without formation) takes a rounded shape. The bark covering the bole and skeletal branches is brown, slightly glossy. The shoots of the Kovalenkovskoe apple tree are thick, rounded, abundantly fleecy with a dark red bark. On the branches bloom medium-sized leaves of an elongated oval shape, crenate at the edges, deep dark green in color. The tree blooms with large white flowers, collected in inflorescences of 4-5 buds.

Fruits are formed on ringlets, but sometimes appear on annual growths. They are large, weighing about 180-200 grams, round in shape. The skin is light green in color, but the main color is difficult to see under the deep red blush that covers almost the entire surface of the apple. Differentiation of the color saturation of the fruit depends on the location of the apple on the tree - the apple will be the brighter the color, the more light it receives during ripening. The flesh of apples is white, fine-grained, juicy and moderately firm. Apples have a very sweet taste and a moderately pronounced aroma.

For 100 grams of apple pulp, there are:

  • 13.6% dry matter;
  • 11% sugar;
  • 0.2% titrated acids;
  • 12.2 mg ascorbic acid;
  • 107 mg of P-active substances.

The variety belongs to the late summer varieties, ripening around mid to late August. Depending on the region of growth, ripening can shift until mid-September.

The variety is winter hardy, moderately resistant to drought and fungal diseases. An obvious disadvantage of Kovalenkovskoe apples is that they have a short shelf life - only 2 months if you store the crop in the refrigerator. However, when ripe, the apples do not fall off the trees. In addition, the variety is distinguished by its fertility - the first crop can be harvested as early as 2 years after planting. The yield is stable, annual.

Landing

The Kovalenkovskoe variety is prepared for planting in the fall, long before the first frost. Planting requirements are traditional: you need a well-lit place, protected from strong winds, preferably deep groundwater. It is important that corn and sunflowers do not grow next to the trees, which dry out the soil too much and do not allow the young seedling to develop normally.

A pit is prepared a week before planting. In depth, it should be about 70-80 centimeters, the width varies from the development of the roots of the seedling. The bottom of the pit is filled with a mixture of humus, superphosphate, potassium and urea. Immediately before planting, it is necessary to straighten the roots of the seedling, fix it in the center of the hole and carefully cover it with soil, tamping it from time to time. After planting, the seedlings are watered abundantly.

Care

Fruit trees, in particular apple trees, require regular care and maintenance during the early years of growth in your garden. After planting, the seedlings must be tied up so as not to interfere with rooting.

In the first year, even if flowers and ovaries are formed, it is important to cut them off so as not to interfere with the tree's development. Thus, you will save him a lot of strength and resources in order to bear fruit next year.

The apple variety presented to us by Professor Kovalenko is moderately resistant to fungal diseases, so it is important not to skip preventive treatments with fungicides and insecticides. In the spring, it is advisable to spray the apple trees and the soil around them with Fitosporin preparations and preparations based on karbofos. The same treatment must be carried out on the eve of flowering, as well as after the harvest has taken place. Carefully read the description of the drugs and carefully follow the instructions for use.

In the spring, it is important to cut off old branches and bark, whitewash the trunks with garden lime.

In the early years, the variety responds well to nitrogen fertilization in April and early June. To do this, you can use urea: dilute 2 tablespoons of urea in 10 liters of water. The solution is poured over the tree trunk circle.

Take a look at a short review of Kovalenkovskoe apples and learn about the benefits of the variety.

The Kovalenkovskoe tree belongs to medium-sized and fast-growing species. The crown is formed of a dense rounded shape (the so-called reverse pyramidal type). Strong skeletal branches grow slightly curved. The brown bark of the trunk and main branches has a slight sheen. The dark red shoots are rather compact. The leaves grow medium and create a dense foliage on the crown.

The Kovalenkovskoe apple tree blooms early. The inflorescence is formed from five large white flowers.

The fruits of the Kovalenkovskoe apple tree ripen large (some have a mass of about 210 g) and have a regular rounded shape (as in the photo).

A distinctive feature of the color is a deep red blush that covers almost the entire surface of the fruit. An interesting feature of the Kovalenkovskoye variety - in areas of excellent illumination, fruits ripen with a bright and rich gamut of shades, and in the middle of the crown and near the trunk, the apples are no longer so elegant.

The white pulp of the Kovalenkovskoe apple is distinguished by its fine-grained and juicy structure. The taste of the fruit can be considered absolutely sweet, since even a slight hint of sourness is absent. The fruits are great for eating fresh and processed (jam, juice, jam, preserves).

The advantages of the Kovalenkovskoye variety include:

  • early maturity - ripe fruits begin to delight gardeners after two to three years
  • stable yield
  • excellent frost resistance
  • good drought tolerance
  • the Kovalenkovskoe apple tree is moderately affected by diseases.

Some disadvantages are considered: a prolonged harvesting period, a predisposition of the variety to thickening of the crown and a short shelf life of fruits.

Apple tree Kovalenkovskoe

Kovalevskoe is called in another way Red sweet and this is fully consistent with reality. The fruits are actually for those with a sweet tooth. But apples are not suitable for everyone, they have a very high sugar content. Unripe apples are also sweet, so you can eat them immediately after removing them from the branch. But it is better to let them mature for at least 14 days, then they will gain maximum sweetness.
In the Yaroslavl region, apple trees grow well, severe prolonged frosts do not cause any significant damage. It turns out to be harvested not earlier than mid-September, if the summer is good, then a little earlier. A big plus of the variety is that apples, after reaching removable maturity, can sag on the branches for another month without deteriorating taste and appearance, none of them fall. Apple trees never take a break for rest, they bear fruit annually and abundantly. The first small crop was harvested 4 years after planting.
The krone needs an annual molding pruning, otherwise thickening will occur and the apples will not gain flavor. In a rainy summer, fungicides are indispensable, otherwise scab is guaranteed. When spraying burgundy liquid, it is important to choose the correct concentration so as not to burn the leaves. Apple trees love sunshine and do not like drafts and winds, so the place for planting must be chosen carefully.

No wonder this variety is also called Red Sweet, apples are really sweet, like honey, I have never seen sweeter. They can be eaten even unripe and will still be sweet. It is unusual that apples ripen in 2-3 doses, and the harvest must be harvested several times, starting at the end of August. At first there are few apples, we manage to eat them, and the next batch ripens. But they are poorly stored, by the end of autumn they are already beginning to wither and deteriorate. I have 2 trees, which in total give 50 kg of harvest, so I have to dry and preserve the apples so that they do not disappear. The trees take root well, we planted seedlings in the ground in winter, so they have already sprouted in the spring, and the next year they brought the first harvest. I looked after them, like any fruit tree: watering, feeding, pruning, spraying. They require the most attention at the seedling stage. When planting, it is necessary to lay out a drainage layer of gravel on the bottom of the pit, pour humus with fertilizers on top, then a layer of fertile soil, and only then a seedling. If everything is done correctly, the apple tree will take root and begin to grow rapidly, and then it needs minimal care. My trees endured frosts well, soon began to bear fruit, and now they have been delighting with a rich harvest for many years.

In terms of color, the fruits of this variety are very similar to the "Starkrimson" variety - the same rich raspberry color, but more round and large in shape. And the taste of these two varieties is very similar: sweet and sour, juicy, with crunchy flesh. But "Kovalenkovskoe" is much less capricious to growing conditions, temperature conditions, humidity. And therefore it is more preferable for growing in central Russia than "Starkrimson", which grows without problems only in the south. Although in this case the harvest will ripen later, but literally for half a month - not at the end of August, but by the end of September.
It begins to bear fruit early, but in the first year of flowering, it is better to cut off the buds, not to be greedy, I wish you a quick harvest. The tree should take root well and gain strength in order to bear fruit well in the future. It is better to plant seedlings in winter, but long before frost. Although the variety is resistant to low temperatures, it is better to let it settle in a new place even before it gets very cold.

Kovalevskoye apples are absolutely sweet, no sourness is caught. The pulp is very juicy, but the density is medium. Therefore, this is not the best option for jam, the pieces may creep. Ripening under the conditions of the Krasnodar Territory occurs in mid-August, but not simultaneously. The harvest period stretches over a couple of weeks. At the same time, apples are not prone to falling off, they hold well on branches. Taste and aroma are fully revealed 10 days after removal from the tree.
The variety does not belong to the maturing variety, the maximum apples are stored for a month. The fruits are rounded, slightly conical in shape, do not differ in the same size. But the plus is that they are never small. The average weight is 170 grams. The color is very diverse, it differs depending on where the apples grew in the crown. The red blush can occupy almost the entire surface, or only a small part. Apples began to bear fruit in the 3rd year after planting. The variety is very resistant to frost, but categorically does not like severe drought, abundant watering is required. Disease resistance is average, occasionally leaves and fruits are affected by scab. Regular chemical treatment is indispensable.

Landing rules

When purchasing seedlings of the Vasyugan apple tree, you should pay attention to the bark and roots. These parts of plants should not contain growths, dark spots, or other signs of disease. The root system cannot be overdried or damaged.

In southern regions with relatively warm winters, apple seedlings are planted in September. In the northern regions, planting is carried out in early spring.

Young Vasyugan seedlings are planted in a hole, up to 70 cm wide and deep. The bottom of the hole should contain a nutrient mixture from:

  • land
  • dolomite flour
  • compost or humus
  • peat
  • superphosphate and potash fertilizers
  • river sand.

A well with a nutrient mixture is prepared in advance, 1-2 weeks before planting apple seedlings in open ground. Immediately before planting, the hole is moistened with 10 liters of water, a peg is driven in the center of the hole. A sapling of a tree is placed in the center of the hole. The roots are evenly straightened, avoiding the formation of creases. The soil around the young apple tree is trampled down, watered with water, mulched and the seedling is fixed near a pre-prepared peg, which serves as a support for the plant.

It is best to grow plants from seedlings purchased from specialized nurseries.

Features of planting and care

As already mentioned, the Kovalenkovskoe apple variety is quite capricious. You will need to find an approach to him and take care of him slightly. The process is not complicated, but mandatory. Apple tree seedlings Kovalenkovskoe must be annual, healthy and free from damage.

Landing dates

The apple tree can be planted in spring and autumn. If this is done at the beginning of the season, then you need to choose a time when the soil has already thawed, and the buds have not yet blossomed.

Technology

Like other fruit crops, the apple tree loves a cozy, sunny place, protected from gusts of wind. The soil should be nutritious, and the place should be level, so that there is no stagnation of moisture.

The planting pit must be prepared in advance. It should be the right size for the roots so that they fit comfortably. Usually its size is 80 * 100 cm or so. A drainage layer is added to the bottom, and wood ash and mineral fertilizers are mixed into the nutrient soil.

Landing is very simple:

  1. A peg is placed in the middle of the pit, to which the seedling will be tied.
  2. A mound is made in the center, roots are placed on it and carefully straightened.
  3. Sprinkle with soil tightly so that there are no voids left.

Distance

Although the apple tree is quite compact, it needs a little space when planting. Usually trees are planted according to the scheme 3 * 5 meters.

Growing

There is an important feature of growing the Kovalenkovskoye variety: it needs to be watered regularly. He is very responsive to the introduction of moisture and fertilizing. But all other rules of agricultural technology will also have to be observed.

Agrotechnics

There are several agrotechnical techniques that are mandatory. These include:

  • regular sanitary and formative pruning
  • proper watering
  • systematic root and leaf feeding
  • keeping the barrel clean and tidy
  • preventive measures against diseases and pests.

These requirements are standard and familiar to all gardeners.

Pruning and shaping the crown

The variety is fast growing and needs regular crown formation. You need to cut off shoots in the fall, remove shoots that grow inward, parallel to the trunk or interfere with others. The entire growth must be cut by a third, leaving a sparse crown.

Pollination

The Kovalenkovskoe variety is self-pollinated and does not need to be planted by neighbors. But breeders note that when several, even self-fertile varieties are planted next to each other, the number of ovaries becomes larger.

How to care

The apple tree, like any plant, needs care. Particular attention should be paid to the tree in the first years of growth.

  1. Disease and pest control. Every spring, the plant must be sprayed as a preventive measure. New products appear in stores every year. To choose your own, carefully read the description on the package.
  2. Watering and fertilizing. Kovalenkovskoe, grows quickly and gives a lot of harvest, therefore it needs abundant watering and annual feeding. Urea can be used as fertilizer.
  3. Pruning. The crown of a tree of this variety is prone to overgrowing, which negatively affects the ripening of apples. Every spring, even before the buds swell, the tree is pruned.

To grow an apple tree of the Kovalenkovsky variety, you need to make a lot of effort, but the harvest will turn out to be decent. Fruits from this tree can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months, so you can enjoy homemade delicious apples even in cold November. And the rich aroma of apples is preserved even when preserved, thanks to which homemade preparations turn out to be successful.
